Attention: Standing Committee on Health & Social Development (An Act to Amend the Emergency Measures Act.) Bill No. 37
Hon. Members,
I wanted to give our perspective on this issue. I represent hundreds of privately held apartment renters on PEI. Our newly formed Island-Wide association named The Residential Rental Association of PEI (RRAP) has been formed to give a much-needed voice to our industry.
We are providing a safe, clean, affordable place to call home with 24/7 service.
We need all stakeholders to come together on all issues surrounding our industry. We feel our voice is not being heard. For instance, our group did an informed survey days before the Emergency ban on evictions went to the supreme court and found it was completely unwarranted!
We were not contacted. If we were, we could have told the parties involved. Not one group member was planning or thinking of an eviction at the time. I had to go to the Guardian to get it to the public that we will not be giving evictions and that this emergency order to the Supreme Court was political grand standing.
Then I had to read that this is one of the main reasons why we need this legislation. It may be a requirement for other reasons, but this emergency eviction was not warranted within our association.
Thanks for the opportunity to express our views.
Sincerely,
Bill McInnis
Chairman
RRAP
