Re: Form a co-op, residents told, Feb. 17

We would like to respond to your article concerning Linkletter Estates.

Homeowners in the Linkletter Estates neighbourhood recently received a letter from the property owners, Twin Rivers Properties of Pictou, N.S., outlining an offer to purchase their lots and form a co-operative. Importantly, the letter specifically stated that this does not mean the site is closing. Rather, it presents residents with an option.

This situation should not come as a surprise. Rental Housing Providers of P.E.I. have repeatedly raised this very scenario in discussions about housing policy. We presented these concerns to the standing committee (September 2024) and again during a special meeting with the minister of housing last month. In fact, we have met with three different ministers responsible for housing over time to discuss the urgent need for policy reform.

Unfortunately, there has been little meaningful action.

The closure of mobile home parks appears to be the goal of the PC government, as they have repeatedly done nothing to address this growing concern.

When housing policy does not reflect economic realities, property owners are left with limited options. Landlords cannot continue to operate at a loss indefinitely. At the same time, tenants are not well served, when necessary, maintenance and infrastructure improvements cannot be completed due to financial constraints.

Sustainable policy must balance tenant protection with the economic viability of housing providers. Without thoughtful reform, we will continue to see difficult situations like this emerge — situations that create uncertainty for residents and strain for operators.

We remain willing to work constructively with government to develop practical solutions that protect residents while ensuring these communities remain viable for the long term.

Executive Director, Rental Housing Providers of P.E.I.
