Landlords not the bad guys

I was deeply offended by the cartoon featured in the Thursday, Nov. 7 edition of The Guardian. It portrayed a landlord as an oversized gunslinger, aiming a rifle labelled “Rent in Advance” at a weak figure with “Tenancy Board” on his hat and a sheriff badge, with a woman cowering behind him, presumably a tenant. This image unfairly reinforces the stereotype of landlords as aggressive “bad guys” targeting tenants, which simply isn’t true.

While a few problematic landlords exist, there are also tenants who leave properties damaged and with unpaid rent. The vast majority of both landlords and tenants are responsible individuals who want fair, respectful interactions. Portraying landlords in this exaggerated, negative light sends a misleading message that all landlords act unjustly, when in reality, most uphold their obligations and work hard to provide stable housing.

Fair representation is important, and I urge The Guardian to consider the impact of such caricatures on the dialogue around rental housing.
